Long-term storage is generally at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, preferably desiccated and protected from light. Lyophilized material is more stable than reconstituted solution, which degrades faster at room temperature. Stability depends on pH, ionic strength, and the presence of oxidising agents. Published stability data for the peptide are limited, so storage claims in catalogues should be treated as general guidance rather than measured guarantees. Freeze-thaw cycles are kept to a minimum.
Identity and purity are normally confirmed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The expected mass for the acetylated 28-residue peptide is close to 3108 daltons, and a mass shift indicates a modification or truncation. Peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion can resolve sequence-level questions. Counter-ion content, water content, and residual solvents are separate quality attributes that a certificate of analysis may or may not report. Aggregation is monitored by size-exclusion chromatography when relevant.
Thymosin alpha-1 is supplied as a lyophilized powder in most research settings. The solid dissolves readily in water and in common aqueous buffers, and it is typically reconstituted shortly before use. Solutions are clear and colourless at ordinary working concentrations. Because the peptide is hygroscopic, weighing and reconstitution are usually performed with minimal exposure to ambient air. Aliquots are prepared to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and working solutions are kept cold.
Identity and purity are assessed with a small set of standard peptide methods. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the main peak from truncated or oxidized species, and its area percentage is the usual purity measure. Mass spectrometry confirms the observed molecular mass against the expected value, while amino acid analysis or peptide mapping checks composition and sequence. Specifications for research-grade material are often stated as 95 percent or higher, though the exact limit depends on the supplier and the intended use.
Laboratory supplies of the peptide usually arrive as a lyophilized powder in sealed vials. The powder is hygroscopic, so a vial should be allowed to reach room temperature before it is opened to prevent condensation on the contents. Weighing and transfer are best performed in a low-humidity environment with clean tools. Once dissolved, the solution should be mixed gently rather than vortexed, because foaming and shear can reduce recovery of the peptide.

Identity and purity are usually checked by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the intact chain from truncated products, together with mass spectrometry for confirmation of the expected mass. Peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion and amino acid analysis add sequence-level evidence. Release testing also covers water content, residual solvents, and counter-ions, all of which influence measured mass and stability. Related-peptide limits are commonly expressed as a percentage of total peak area, with individual unspecified impurities held below a lower threshold.
The lyophilized peptide is a white to off-white powder that dissolves freely in water and in aqueous buffers near neutral pH. Because the molecule carries a net negative charge under physiological conditions, saline and phosphate solutions are the usual vehicles, while strongly acidic media are avoided. Stock solutions are commonly divided into small aliquots so that repeated freezing and thawing can be limited, since cycling may encourage aggregation. Solubility in organic solvents is poor and those solvents are seldom used as primary diluents.
Several names appear in the literature for this peptide, including thymalfasin and the abbreviation T-alpha-1. Naming conventions differ among research articles, regulatory documents, and supplier catalogs, which complicates literature searches. Both synthetic and recombinant production routes yield a peptide with the same 28-residue sequence as the thymic isolate. Because the thymosin label also covers unrelated peptides, sources should be compared by sequence rather than by name alone.
The peptide occurs naturally in thymic tissue and has been detected in serum and other biological fluids. Reported concentrations are low, and reliable measurement generally requires immunoassay or mass spectrometry with an enrichment step. It is released from a larger precursor, prothymosin alpha, by proteolytic cleavage, although the enzymes involved are not fully characterized. Whether circulating levels reflect thymic output specifically remains an open question.
Thymosin alpha 1 is a 28-amino-acid peptide first isolated from thymosin fraction 5, a bovine thymic extract. Its sequence begins with an acetylated serine residue and carries a high proportion of acidic residues, so the molecule has a net negative charge near neutral pH. Despite the shared name, it is unrelated in sequence to the thymosin beta family. Synthetic material prepared by solid-phase peptide synthesis is identical in sequence to the natural peptide.
The peptide lacks cysteine, methionine, and tryptophan, so disulfide scrambling and sulfur oxidation are not major degradation routes. Instead, aspartate residues can undergo isomerization or cyclization to succinimide intermediates, generating isoaspartate variants. Hydrolysis of peptide bonds also occurs slowly in solution. These changes may reduce biological activity even when the main peak remains detectable. Stability studies therefore track both potency and the appearance of related substances.
Lyophilized thymosin alpha 1 is typically stored refrigerated at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and kept away from light. Reconstituted solutions are less stable and are usually used promptly after preparation. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they can promote aggregation and loss of activity. The peptide adsorbs to some plastic and glass surfaces, so a carrier protein is often added to dilute working solutions. Manufacturer instructions and published protocols both govern handling.
== Plot summary == The novel begins with a brief prologue describing the bioforms—dubbed the First-Born—who created the black monoliths. They evolved from "primordial soup", and over the course of millions of years became a space-faring species. Perceiving that nothing was more precious than the mind, they catalysed the evolution of intelligent species wherever they went, by increasing the intelligent species' chance of survival. After visiting Earth, the First-Born found a way to impress themselves into the fabric of space and time, becoming effectively immortal. Meanwhile, the monoliths—implied to have been forgotten by their creators when they ascended to a higher state of being—continued to watch over their subjects. 3001 follows the adventures of Frank Poole, the astronaut killed by the HAL 9000 computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey. One millennium later, Poole's freeze-dried body is discovered floating in the Kuiper belt by a comet-collecting space tug named the Goliath, and revived. The resurrected Poole is taken home to learn about the Earth in the year 3001. Some of its notable features include the BrainCap, a brain–computer interface technology; genetically engineered dinosaur servants; and four gigantic space elevators located evenly around the Equator. Humans have also colonised the Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto. TMA-1, the black monolith found on the Moon in 1999, had been brought to Earth in 2006 and installed in front of the United Nations Building in New York City.
Insulin on board: This calculation is based on the size of a bolus, the time elapsed since the completion of the bolus, and a programmable metabolic rate. The pump software will estimate the insulin remaining in the bloodstream and relay it to the user. This supports the process of performing a new bolus before the effects of the last bolus are complete and, thereby, helps prevent the user from overcompensating for high blood sugar with unnecessary correction boluses. Bolus calculators: Pump software helps by calculating the dose for the next insulin bolus. The user enters the grams of carbohydrates to be consumed, and the bolus "wizard" calculates the units of insulin needed. It adjusts for the most recent blood glucose level and the insulin on board, and then suggests the best insulin dose to the user to approve and deliver. Custom alarms: The pump can monitor for activities during specific times of day and alarm the user if an expected activity did not occur. Examples include a missed meal bolus, a missed blood glucose test, a new blood glucose test 15 minutes after a low blood glucose test, etc. The alarms are customized for each user. Touch bolus: For persons with visual impairments, this button on the pump can be used to bolus for insulin without using the display. This works with a system of beeps or vibrations to confirm the bolus parameters to the pump user. This feature is described as 'touch', 'audio', or 'easy' bolus depending on brand. The feature was first introduced in the mid- to late 1990s.
Teleosts have four major life stages: the egg, the larva, the juvenile and the adult. Species may begin life in a pelagic environment or a demersal environment (near the seabed). Most marine teleosts have pelagic eggs, which are light, transparent and buoyant with thin envelopes. Pelagic eggs rely on the ocean currents to disperse and receive no parental care. When they hatch, the larvae are planktonic and unable to swim. They have a yolk sac attached to them which provides nutrients. Most freshwater species produce demersal eggs which are thick, pigmented, relatively heavy and able to stick to substrates. Parental care is much more common among freshwater fish. Unlike their pelagic counterparts, demersal larvae are able to swim and feed as soon as they hatch. Larval teleosts often look very different from adults, particularly in marine species. Some larvae were even considered different species from the adults. Larvae have high mortality rates, most die from starvation or predation within their first week. As they grow, survival rates increase and there is greater physiological tolerance and sensitivity, ecological and behavioural competence. At the juvenile stage, a teleost looks more like its adult form. At this stage, its axial skeleton, internal organs, scales, pigmentation and fins are fully developed. The transition from larvae to juvenile can be short and fairly simple, lasting minutes or hours as in some damselfish, while in other species, like salmon, squirrelfish, gobies and flatfishes, the transition is more complex and takes several weeks to complete.
== Relationship with humans == The chain catshark is not currently fished for human consumption. The chain catshark has been described as "gorgeous", and this, combined with its small size, makes it a popular cold-water aquarium fish. It is frequently displayed and bred at public aquariums. Research in shark behavior, including reproduction, has been done in chain catsharks kept in public aquariums or laboratories.

=== Hartig net === The Hartig net is formed by an ingrowth of hyphae (often originating from the inner part of the surrounding mantle) into the root of the plant host. The hyphae penetrate and grow in a transverse direction to the axis of the root, and thus form a network between the outer cells of the root axis. In this region fungal and root cells touch, and this is where nutrient and carbon exchange occurs. The depth of penetration differs between species. In Eucalyptus and Alnus the Hartig net is confined to the epidermis, whereas in most gymnosperms the hyphae penetrate more deeply, into the cortical cells or the endodermis. In many epidermal types elongation of cells along the epidermis occurs, increasing surface contact between fungus and root cells. Most cortical type Hartig nets do not show this elongation, suggesting different strategies for increasing surface contact among species.
== Legacy == Laidlaw's "Epistle 3" story triggered a backlash from fans who took it as evidence that Valve had abandoned the Half-Life series. Some review bombed Valve's game Dota 2 on Valve's distribution service, Steam. The "Epistle 3" story also inspired fan games. After canceling several further Half-Life games, Valve released a VR game, Half-Life: Alyx, in 2020. Walker said the team saw VR as a way to return to the series. Phil Iwaunik of PCGamesN wrote in 2021 that the cancelation of Episode Three may have benefited the legacy of Half-Life 2, citing the lack of cultural impact of Alyx and the "mystery, speculation and melancholy" of an unfinished sequel. In 2024, Valve released footage and concept art of Episode Three as part of a documentary about the making of Half-Life 2.
==== Peptide and protein ==== Peptide hormones and protein hormones consist of three (in the case of thyrotropin-releasing hormone) to more than 200 (in the case of follicle-stimulating hormone) amino acid residues and can have a molecular mass as large as 31,000 grams per mole. All hormones secreted by the pituitary gland are peptide hormones, as are leptin from adipocytes, ghrelin from the stomach, and insulin from the pancreas.
On 24 April 1939, Paul Harteck and his assistant, Wilhelm Groth, had written to the Armed Forces High Command (OKW), alerting it to the possibility of the development of an atomic bomb. The Army Weapons Branch (HWA) had established a physics section under the nuclear physicist Kurt Diebner. After the war began on 1 September 1939, the HWA moved to control the German nuclear weapons program. From then on, Hahn participated in a ceaseless series of meetings related to the project. After the Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics, Peter Debye, left for the United States in 1940 and never returned, Diebner was installed as its director. Hahn reported to the HWA on the progress of his research. Together with his assistants, Hans-Joachim Born, Siegfried Flügge, Hans Götte, Walter Seelmann-Eggebert and Strassmann, he catalogued about one hundred fission product isotopes. They also investigated means of isotope separation; the chemistry of element 93 and methods for purifying uranium oxides and salts. On the night of 15 February 1944, the KWIC building was struck by a bomb. Hahn's office was destroyed, along with his correspondence with Rutherford and other researchers, and many of his possessions. The office was the intended target of the raid, which had been ordered by Brigadier General Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, to disrupt the German uranium project. Albert Speer, the Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production, arranged for the institute to move to Tailfingen (today part of Albstadt) in southern Germany.

=== Limosilactobacillus fermentum ME-3 === The strain L. fermentum ME-3 has recently been discovered and identified as an antimicrobial and antioxidative probiotic. This strain of L. fermentum was discovered from the analysis of human fecal samples in 1994. One of the important characteristics of a probiotic microbe is the tolerance to conditions in the digestive tract. Tests conducted on the ME-3 strain in different bile concentrations found that it was able to survive without large loss in numbers. It has also been found that L. fermentum ME-3 has a tolerance to survive drops of pH levels. It can withstand a drop in values from 4.0 to 2.5 without decreasing in numbers. These characteristics of tolerance to bile concentrations and pH levels serve to classify ME-3 as a probiotic. Limosilactobacillus fermentum ME-3 has also been found to have the capability to suppress mainly gram-negative bacteria. To a lesser extent, ME-3 has also been observed to be able to suppress enterococci and Staphylococcus aureus. This would serve a beneficial purpose to the host. ME-3 has several antimicrobial characteristics. These include acetic, lactic and succinic acids. Research on the antioxidant properties of strain ME-3 in soft cheese products revealed that it prevented spoilage. Experimentation has also been conducted on the consumption of the ME-3 strain. The consumption had a positive influence on the microbiota of the gut. Volunteers were given goat milk fermented by strain ME-3 and capsulated ME-3.
Americium-242m (half-life 141 years) is one of the rare cases, like 108mAg, 166mHo, 180mTa, 186mRe, 192mIr, 210mBi, 212mPo and others, where a higher-energy nuclear isomer is more stable than its ground state. While that ground state, 242Am, decays with half-life 16.02 hours by beta emission or electron capture, in a typical example of spin-forbiddenness the isomer does not decay by those modes, but falls to the ground state very slowly (99.55% of decays) or emits an alpha particle (0.45%, partial half-life 31 ky). 242mAm is fissile with a low critical mass, comparable to that of 239Pu. It has a very high fission cross section, and is quickly destroyed if it is produced in a nuclear reactor. It has been investigated whether this isotope could be used for a novel type of nuclear rocket.
Conversely, with some other catalysts, ethylene oxide may be reduced by hydrogen to ethylene with the yield up to 70%. The reduction catalysts include mixtures of zinc dust and acetic acid, of lithium aluminium hydride with titanium trichloride (the reducing agent is actually titanium dichloride, formed by the reaction between LiAlH4 and TiCl3) and of iron(III) chloride with butyllithium in tetrahydrofuran.

Lyophilized powder is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or below, in a sealed container, desiccated and away from light. Reconstituted solutions are less stable and are usually refrigerated and used quickly. Repeated temperature cycling should be avoided.
Mass spectrometry gives the molecular mass, which is compared with the calculated value. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography shows purity and the presence of related impurities. Peptide mapping can verify the amino acid sequence when a higher level of detail is needed.
It reports the tests the supplier performed, which may vary between laboratories and lots. Methods and acceptance criteria are not standardised across suppliers. Buyers often request the actual chromatograms and spectra rather than a summary statement.
Aliquots are typically frozen well below zero Celsius and thawed only once, since repeated cycles promote aggregation and loss. Dilution into a neutral buffer limits degradation during short working periods, and prolonged storage at room temperature is avoided.
